RIP Rodney
Well I never got around to introducing Rodney, my 23yr old qh gelding. I owned Rod several years ago and sold him while I was in Texas working for Mike as I had too much trouble finding him a ride to Texas. The girl I sold him to let him get down to a body score of about a high 1/low 2 and handed him over to a rescue group. Thankfully the woman who runs the rescue is a friend of mine and knew I wanted him back. Well Rodney never bounced back very well. He couldn't tolerate warm weather at ALL and it was getting worse. When i got him back he quickly rebounded and put on enough weight to just be considered underweight, then the heat of the summer started coming on and he dropped it all back off. We fought all last summer trying to get and keep weight on him. We tried different diets and different amounts with no luck. He would put on a little then it would be hot for a few days and he would immediately sweat it all back off. Thankfully all summer there was no sign of founder, something which had plaqued us the first time I owned him.
With fall came cooler weather and he started doing better, put on a little weight. I started working him a little, trying to build muscle but even the slightest work caused him to overheat and rather than build muscle it just melted the weight off. So i left him alone and over the winter he came to look almost normal, almost back up to his best weight last April when he was just a little underweight. Almost.
Longer days prompted the boys to start shedding and I was dismayed to see that he had more hair than I thought and he wasn't quite as filled out as I thought. I was concerned as I thought we were coming out of winter in decent shape and though I had been struggling with the decision of what to do this summer, I was optimistic that at least we were starting with a decent base and had finally found a diet that seemed to be doing well. He wasn't bad but still not as heavy as I wanted him to be.
As we started getting warmer days I saw his telltale signs of overheating. He had one spot on his right shoulder that was the last to hair up in the fall and the first to shed out in the spring and when he would get warm that was the first spot to start sweating. It was slick and I was noticing more and more days that it was damp with sweat. The weight started melting off of him already and I started thinking more and more that maybe it would be best to put him down. I knew I couldn't let him yo-yo up and down like he did last year. Then the worst thing happened and he started showing signs of founder again. I knew then that it was time.
I called the vet and made the appointment and last Thursday, 4/16/09, she came out and we put my old man down. It hurt like hell but it was fast and peaceful and I know it was the right thing to do. For him. Now he is grazing peacefully and is fat and healthy like he hadn't been for years. Goodby my old man, I loved you dearly and wish we had had many more years together.

What's going on?
Ok so I knew going into this that I would have a hard time posting regularly. Maybe I just need to force myself to come up with something, anything, to post every day. Maybe after the habit of posting daily sinks in then the ideas will come easier. I hope.
Ok so what's going on in my world right now? Work is going pretty well. We are busy busy busy and amazingly enough in a time when people are losing jobs left and right, businesses are closing, companies going bankrupt and such, our business is growing rapidly and we have been hiring like mad.
Home life is absolutely fabulous. I am so in love with my husband it isn't even real. He is so wonderful and I consider myself the luckiest woman in the world to have found him. We are in sync on just about everything. Things are great now and only getting better every day. We miss Pixie dearly (hmm...I should do a post on her...) but all is well.
Sean made me a rabbitry for Valentines day (not as sparkly as the beautiful diamond earrings or as tasty as the chocolate covered strawberries but infinitely more useful!!) and boy is it nice to be able to take care of my bunnies without struggling with tarps all the time! It is bright and pretty and easy to keep clean. We will hopefully be having baby bunnies in not too long, I will be sure to post pictures!! I am also looking for some standard Rex does if you know of anyone with any for sale.
The horses are doing pretty good. Starting to shed like mad, I took enough hair off of Rodney yesterday to make two more horses his size! I am so worried about him though. He is doing great now but he always does when the weather is cool, it's when it heats up that we start really struggling to keep any weight on him. I can't let him cycle up and down like he did last year, up to a great weight, all the way back down to a low body score during the summer and back up to a decent weight for the winter. It can't be good for his sytem to lose and gain and lose like that all the time. I am afraid if we can't figure out why he's doing this that I will have to put him down this summer. He seems so healthy otherwise and he's sure full of life but I hate to see him get so skinny no matter what I do. *sigh* Silly old man anyways. He's had a few bad years in his life but hopefully the majority of his 23 years have been good ones. Hopefully he does know he is loved dearly anyways. He acts like he does.
Dad is doing well. For those who don't know, he had a heart attack and a triple bypass on January 30th. I went to Louisiana to take care of him when he got out of the hospital. I was down there for two weeks. He is back to his old self now but improved! He has quit smoking, is working out and eating better so hopefully I will have him around for a long time yet.
Ok well I'm out of immediate ideas and have some work to do (they actually expect me to do that while I'm here sheesh the nerve) so I will say goodbye for now and will do a Pixie post in a while.

Kentucky Horse Racing Commission Approves Non-racing Breed Incentives Eleven groups to receive funding
FRANKFORT, KY – (Feb. 10, 2009) – The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) today voted to provide ten applicant groups of non-racing breeds with funding from the Kentucky Horse Breeder’s Incentive Fund (KHBIF) for the period covering 2009-2011. A total of sixteen applications were submitted to the Commission. Applicants were selected based on the criteria set forth by the KHBIF statutes, regulations and mission of the fund.
"The non race advisory committee met to review and discuss the applications and I applaud their due-diligence,” said Jamie Eads, director of the Division of Breeder’s Incentives. “The KHBIF was thrilled with the added interest from so many breeds and is excited to continue working together to ensure the strength and growth of the horse industry in Kentucky."
KHBIF will use the same formula established in the first period (2006-2008) for splitting the monies proportionally among the breeds. This formula is the number of horses certified by each national registry residing in Kentucky divided by the total number of horses submitted by each affiliate’s national registry. The resulting percentage will be multiplied by the monies collected to give the breed their total dollar figure award from the fund. This percentage will cover the three-year period of 2009, 2010, and 2011.
The Commission approved the following applicants (applicants new to this registration period appear in italics):
Kentucky Appaloosa Owners Association
Kentucky Arabian & Half-Arabian Breeders Association
Kentucky Miniature Horse Association
Kentucky Morgan Horse Association
Kentucky Paint Horse Club
Kentucky Paso Fino Horse Association
Kentucky Quarter Horse Association
Kentucky Rocky Mountain Horse Association
Kentucky Saddlebred Owners & Breeders Association
South Central Hackney Association
The following applicants were denied for KHBIF funding for the 2009-2011 period. These applicants did not meet the criteria established by the KHBIF and Non-Race Advisory Committee.
Kentucky Belgian
Warmbloods of Kentucky
Mountain Horse Breeders Incentive Fund (AGHA, KMSHA, MPH, UMH).
Purebred Morabs of Kentucky
Kentucky Pony Association
Kentucky Shayga Arabian Horse Association
Walk Horse Alliance of Kentucky
The Commission elected to defer the Kentucky Walking Horse Association application to be reviewed by the Rules Committee and re-submitted to the Commission at a later meeting.
